THE COUNTRY AT A GLANCE
Cameroon is a triangle of about 475.000 kilometers square with a population of close to Eighteen million inhabitants (situated in the heart of the Golf of Guinea), it is bounded on the North by the Republic of Chad, on the East by the Republic of Central Africa, on the South by Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and on the West by Nigeria.
The country is divided into ten provinces and is renowned for its bilingualism, cultural and religious diversity.
The largest population concentration is in Douala, the Economic Capital, and, Yaounde, the Political Capital. Most of the economic and industrial activities take place in Douala. Its two national languages are English and French and these are used in commercial matters and in politics and government.
Cameroon is rich in agricultural resources (Cocoa, Coffee, Banana, Cotton, Rubber, vegetables, etc.) and these constitute 40% of its Gross National Income. Timber/ forestry exploitation represents more than 7% of the Gross National Income with more than three million cubic yard exported annually.
Cameroon has a Free Trade zone regulated by extensive legislation very protective and advantageous to foreign investors producing for export purpose only.
The country has embarked on fundamental political, social and economic reforms and the process is ongoing. The economy is predominantly based on free market principles, with some insignificant areas of state control. Having a well-established trade links with the rest of the continent, and being the main entry port to land-locked countries like Chad and Central African Republic; Cameroon is a suitable base for generating investment and trade with the rest of Africa and the World.
